Solar Photovoltaic Panels: Frequently Asked Questions?
What are Solar Photovoltaic Panels?
Solar photovoltaic panels, or solar PV panels, are a solar power generation device which takes the energy of the sun and converts it into electrical energy which can be used throughout your home.
How much energy can they produce?
The amount that your system can produce depends on the size and location of your system and the amount of the sunlight that the solar PV panels have upon them. However, we usually estimate between 600 to 800 kWh per year for each 1kW system. Therefore with a 3 kW system you could expect to generate between 1800-2400 kWh per year. The average home requires around 2000-3000 kWh per year, therefore, a 1 kW system could produce up to 30% of your energy requirements.
Are there any Government Grants for Solar PV?
There are no grants currently available for installation of solar PV, but the Government has set up a generous scheme to persuade you to install solar PV. For each kWh of electricity you create the Government will pay you around 43p, whether you use this electricity for your own consumption or sell it to one of the power companies. When you consider that electricity costs about 12 pence per kWh this seem particularly good. So that you are certain to recoup your initial investment, cross party support has been gained to keep this payback for the next 20 years. (of course, from the Governments’ point of view you are reducing the UK’s dependence on fuel which has to be bought with foreign currency and help it keep its Kyoto agreement)
How can I sell electricity back to the National Grid?
The governments new FIT (Feed in Tariff) scheme is based around homes with surplus energy production selling their energy back to the National Grid. Contact us to find out more about our systems and how you can make money from your surplus energy.
How much roof space do I need?
The amount of roof space required varies dependant on the size of the system you wish to install. However, if space is an issue, you may also fit solar panels in a garden or similar space. Unlike solar hot water systems that work best if facing south, solar PV panels just need daylight, so the orientation is not important. This means that where possible, a flat roof work particularly well.
Do I need planning permission?
You should not need planning permission in the vast majority of cases, yet, some planning may be required for heritage or conservation areas.
How much will a Solar PV system cost?
As we customise and install your system, giving a unique and bespoke service, we are able to quote for a range of budgets. Contact us to arrange a demonstration or quotation on your requirements.
Do they work when the weather is cloudy?
Yes. The solar PV panels work throughout all weathers, however, the clouds may affect the rate at which your electricity can be produced due to blocking a proportion of the suns energy.
Where can I get my Solar PV system?
Contact us today to find out how our solar PV panels can start producing your energy, reduce the cost of your bills and provide clean, renewable energy for your home.
