Energy Savings from the Sun

Hi Tech company installs Solar Heating near St Neots

Tensor Time and Attendance and Access Control SystemsTensor plc is a hi-tech company specialising in the design, manufacture and installation of Time & Attendance and Access Control equipment. In 2009 their Group Finance Director, John Yull, was looking at ways to reduce the company’s energy costs and at the same time cut the business CO2 emissions.

After hearing about SolarSaves’ glass evacuated solar heating system John Yull installed a two collector system at their warehousing site close to the A1 trunk road at Little Paxton, Cambridgeshire. Site manager, Mr Summerfield, explained that for much of the year the south facing solar collectors provide all the hot water needs of the site. “You have to remember that we only use hot water for hand washing, so we program the SolarSave system to keep the hot water at around 45°c. To overcome any salmonella problems we have programmed in a boost to 60°c for 1½ hours once a week”.

Tensor have also utilised the HeatingSave program that came with the system so that they can better manage their central heating system in winter.

There is no question that we have saved on the amount of oil needed to heat our hot water” explained John Yull to the SolarSave reporter. “We have run the HeatingSave building energy management system for about a year. This also controls the internal lighting and external lights at night. From the PC software I can now see the cost, kilo-watt hours and notional CO2 of the site – an accountants dream!” he added.

Tensor say that they have reduced their immersion heating electricity consumption as well electricity for lights as they are automatically switched off when people are not on site.
